Peer Helper Program

Foley Middle School is pleased to announce the establishment of a Peer Helper Program. The program is sponsored by the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation which also sponsors six high School Peer Helper Programs and two other middle school programs in Baldwin County. Our Peer Helpers, who include 7 students in 8th grade and 8 students in 7th grade, are trained in peer mediation. They help their fellow students solve conflicts in a peaceful manner. Referrals are made to peer mediation by an Administrator, Teacher, Counselor, or the disputants themselves. Types of conflicts that may result in a request for peer mediation include: teasing, threats, name calling, rumors, friendship, property, and disruptive arguing. The Counselors determine the appropriateness of a peer mediation referral. Peer Helpers are trained to inform students of the confidential nature of mediation, except if it involves drugs, weapons, sexual harassment, or abuse. If it does, the Peer Helpers are directed to stop the mediation and report it to a Counselor.

Peer Helpers are also assigned new students whenever possible to act as buddies for the transferred students. This buddy system assists our new students in feeling more comfortable with what may be a difficult transition.

Our Peer Helpers have accepted the responsibility of performing a very important service for our school. They have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of their classmates. For more information regarding the Peer Helper Program, please contact Mrs. Doyle and/or Mr. Baxter.
